YouTube Shorts Maker
Make the file, then make it work on YouTube. Paste a link and get a vertical Short in two minutes, then use the rest of this page for the part nobody explains: how the Shorts shelf actually treats what you upload, and the one setting that turns cheap reach into long form watch time.
First Short free. No account, no software, nothing to upload.
How YouTube decides your upload is a Short
There is no Shorts upload button and there never really was. You upload a video the normal way, and YouTube classifies it from the file itself. Two conditions, both mechanical:
- Vertical or square. Taller than wide, or exactly square. Landscape is never a Short.
- Three minutes or less. One second over and it becomes an ordinary upload.
Miss either and your video lands in your regular uploads with no Shorts distribution at all, which is the quiet failure people spend a week diagnosing. There is no error and no warning; the video simply never appears in the feed it was made for.
Link the Short to the long video
This is the most valuable YouTube specific feature available to a creator and most people never touch it. When you upload a Short, you can attach it to a related full length video from your channel. Viewers then see a link to that video while they are watching the clip.
Why it matters comes down to money. Shorts pay somewhere around three to ten cents per thousand views. Long form pays dollars per thousand. A viewer who follows the link is worth roughly a hundred times what they were worth as a Shorts view, and the link is free to add.
Treat every Short as an advertisement for a longer video. The ad revenue on the Short is a rounding error; the click through is the point.
The full arithmetic behind that claim, with the real RPM figures and the monetisation thresholds, is in do YouTube Shorts make money.
The music library quietly caps you at 60 seconds
YouTube raised the Shorts maximum to three minutes, and then left one exception in place that catches almost everybody at least once. If you add a track from YouTube's licensed music library, your Short is still limited to sixty seconds, because the licences behind that library cover that duration.
It is not a rollout delay or a bug. Use original audio or a royalty free track you hold rights to and the full three minutes becomes available immediately. This single detail explains most of the confusion in comment threads about whether the three minute change actually happened.
| Audio source | Maximum length |
|---|---|
| Original audio from your video | 3 minutes |
| Royalty free or your own licence | 3 minutes |
| YouTube licensed music library | 60 seconds |
What Shorts actually do for a YouTube channel
Shorts and long form videos are recommended by separate systems, so posting a run of Shorts does not damage your main uploads. That is the good news, and it is also where the useful nuance starts.
They reach people who have never heard of you
The Shorts feed does not care how many subscribers you have. It cares whether people finish the video. That makes it the only place on YouTube where a channel with no audience competes on equal terms.
They convert to subscribers weakly
A Shorts subscriber is a much lighter commitment than a long form subscriber, and a channel built purely on Shorts often sees disappointing views on its next full video. Expect introduction, not loyalty.
They are almost free to make
If the footage already exists, a Short costs minutes. That economics is the whole argument: cheap reach that occasionally converts beats expensive reach that usually does not.
They reward consistency more than brilliance
Because distribution is decided per video rather than per channel, posting four good clips a week beats one exceptional clip a month. The feed forgets you faster than the subscriptions tab does.
The upload checklist for a Short
Check the shape and length
1080 by 1920, under three minutes. This is what decides classification, and nothing else does.
Write the title as the hook
It appears over the video in the feed and it is the only text a scroller reads before deciding. Write the hook, not a description of the contents.
Attach the related video
Link the Short to the long form it came from. This is the step that pays for the whole exercise, and it takes one click.
Check the first frame
Shorts autoplay, so the opening frame is doing the job a thumbnail does elsewhere. A clip that opens mid transition wastes it.
